Is Your AC Freezing Up?

A frozen AC is one of the most common calls we get all summer. Here’s what to check before calling anyone:

1. Check your air filter first. A dirty, clogged filter is the #1 cause of frozen coils. If it’s gray and matted, replace it and turn the system OFF for 2-3 hours to let it thaw. Then turn it back on with a clean filter and see if it cools normally.

2. Check all your vents. Make sure every supply and return vent in the house is open and unblocked. Closed vents restrict airflow and cause the evaporator coil to freeze. This includes vents in rooms you don’t use.

3. Look at the refrigerant line outside. The large insulated copper line running into your outdoor unit should never have ice on it. If it does, your system is either low on refrigerant or has an airflow problem. At that point, turn the system off and call a technician — running a frozen system can damage your compressor.
