Is Your Thermostat the Problem

Is Your Thermostat the Problem? Here’s a 2-Minute Test

Before assuming your AC is broken, rule out the thermostat. A faulty or misconfigured thermostat causes a lot of unnecessary service calls.

Here’s the quick test:

Set the thermostat to COOL and drop the temperature setting 5 degrees below the current room temperature.

Wait 2-3 minutes. You should hear the outdoor unit kick on and feel air coming from the vents within a few minutes.

If nothing happens, check the batteries in your thermostat — even hardwired thermostats often have battery backup that can fail.

If you have a digital thermostat, try resetting it by removing it from the wall base for 30 seconds and reseating it.

If the thermostat looks fine but the system still won’t respond, the problem is in the system itself — not the controls. At that point it’s time to call.
