Outdoor Unit Humming But Not Starting? It’s Probably the Capacitor
If you walk outside and hear your unit humming but the fan isn’t spinning, there’s a good chance the capacitor has failed. The capacitor is a small cylindrical part that gives the fan motor and compressor the jolt they need to start up.
Here’s how to tell:
The unit hums but the fan blade isn’t moving
You might notice the top of the unit is hot
Sometimes the fan will spin if you give it a gentle nudge with a stick through the grate — if it then runs on its own, that’s a near-certain sign of a bad capacitor
Do not keep trying to run the unit. A humming compressor that can’t start will overheat and fail — turning a capacitor repair into a much more expensive problem.
Capacitor replacement is one of the fastest repairs we do. Call or text Mike at (985) 516-3353 and we can usually get to you same day.
